I love science. The weird thing is, in this culture, you're not allowed to love science and be religious. Kind of weird to me, but, whatever. I can't help it. Science is interesting to me and, although I wasn't good at the math part of it, it's always been a pretty decent subject of mine in school. Our technology has brought together so many amazing facts about the earth, space, water, everything! It's always, always, always changing and we're always discovering new things! As I'm typing this, there are new things being discovered! Whoa! As I said, this culture tends to have this "science vs religion" kind of thing and, frankly, I don't know how necessary or useful it is.
Like most people my age, I grew up watching Bill Nye: The Science Guy. My teachers used him to help connect anything we weren't getting and he was entertaining! He made science fun and enjoyable and probably is to thank for the up and coming scientists of this generation. He is, really, the most popular scientist of this time and pretty cool, too. Recently he had a debate with a Creationist and many of the liberal things I follow says he won. I agree, but that's not what we're talking about.
Many people who argue for this division between religion and science says that science has never had to alter a thing while religion has had to make shift answers given new discoveries. To that, I would say, first, that science, as I mentioned, changes every day. All the time. It shifts dramatically. And further, I'd say, thanks to the awesome technology, science is quickening. Which is great! Religion has shifted because new discoveries, new social circumstances, new ways of thinking are evolving. Religion changes all the time. All the time. Another reason why I love it! It shifts to meet the people where they are and can best understand and love it. Although rooted in tradition, it is vastly different. Even my religion is way different from my parents. Even though we go to the same church.
Science is wonderful. I find religion to be equally wonderful. Some people don't find religion wonderful. Some people don't find science wonderful. However, I'm not sure how necessary it is to continue to feed into the culture of religion VS science. Of course, I understand, as I said, there are people who aren't religious and who "believe the facts." Which I totally get because I, too, love science and believe everything I've been taught in science classes (plus). I, too, believe people believe in strictly what the Bible says. Once again, I get that, clearly. But I believe science and religion can make one super awesome super power if we let it. Or science can be science and religion religion.
What I'm saying is that every time I say "I believe in evolution," I shouldn't get pats on the back from scientists and "how could you betray us!" looks from the religious in my life. Science works wonders, and to deny that in this day and age is pretty weird. Religion is also something that has totally changed humanity for thousands of years. To deny that is pretty weird, too. Let's come together knowing, sure we may have our differences, but maybe we can work something out between us. Like Remember the Titans! Think: What would Denzel Washington do?
Woo!

A cool, interesting infograph!
